[revised February 2026] When in Rome… use the apps the Romans use!

First of all, you cannot visit Italy without downloading Whatsapp, we all use it here and it is very useful for last-minute communication with your guides and other local suppliers.

And below you find a list of apps which can be useful for your time in Rome. Please send us a message to info@afriendinrome.it to add other apps that you found interesting and we’ll improve the list little by little.

  • Museums and churches > the app Musei Italiani allows you to check infos on most of our State museums and also book some of them, for instance the Pantheon here in Rome.  The app Din Don Dan gives you the opening times and mass schedule of most churches in Italy, useful to attend  a service or to avoid it when you wish to visit an artistic church (which is not possible – of course – during mass. Still “unpredictable service” can happen, like funerals, weddings or pilgrims masses)
  • Taxi: you can use Uber, and you find both the private black vans and the  public white cabs in the Italian version of the app. Otherwise the apps to call a taxi in Rome are itTaxi, Free Now and App Taxi
  • Trains: we have two main companies working in Italy, Trenitalia and Italo.
  • E bikes and scooters: the sharing companies you find in Rome are Lime, Dott and Cooltra
  • Public transportation: with Moovit you get help to use public transportation in Rome.
  • Water fountains: we have tons of public fountains in Rome, enjoy our free fresh safe water and don’t buy another overpriced plastic bottle of water. Use Acquea to locate the closest water point.
  • Toilets: exactly the opposite of the above, we have very few public toilets, that’s why the app WC Roma is useful
  • Luggage deposit: you can find a close spot to store your luggage with Bounce
